The Prius is the car of the future. It was first released in Canada in 1997. It looked futuristic, had 13" wheels, and was quite different!

In 2004, things changed. The Prius (pree-us) was announced the car of the year. It is a very practical car now with a liftback, with seats that fold down 60/40 to almost flat. It has normal 15" tires, a clean look and a smooth ride.

Of course this car is different, but I try to see it as a normal car. It is a full hybrid. Part electric and part gasoline powered car. Under normal driving, the Prius usually starts off under electric power and continues for awhile until the engine starts. The gas engine stops again at stop signs or while you are stopped at a light. It also stops when you decelerate on the highway.

This car has electric air conditioning, electric power steering, and the same zero to 100 Kilometres per hour as the 4 cylinder Camry! However, its top speed is 160 Kilometres per hour.

The Prius is a super ultra low emmission vehicle. ( Almost no emmissions ) It achieves 71 MPG in the city and 67 MPG on the highway. It charges the battery when you use the brakes or slow down.

Toyota is behind this technology completely. They offer an 8 year or 160,000 km warranty on the hybrid related components. Lexus (Toyota luxury division )has recently announced that all of their cars will use this technology.

The best way to learn about this car is to drive it! Toyota has made the Highlander Hybrid as well (38 MPG) and has announced a Camry Hybrid for 2007!
